My child’s account has been hacked

If someone else is in the account, the first step is to lock them out — not to message them. Stay calm: most accounts can be recovered if you act quickly.

In short

Change the password on a device you trust. Sign other devices out. Turn on two-step verification if the service has it. Write to Snapchat, Roblox, Discord or the store you use. SletDet at Save the Children Denmark can advise if the account was misused. Keep screenshots of what changed.

  1. 1

    Change the password

Do this on your own phone or computer. Choose a new password that is not used elsewhere. Two-step verification means a second code is needed — often from SMS or an app — besides the password. Turn it on straight away if the service offers it.

  2. 2

    Sign other devices out

Most apps have a place listing devices or where you are signed in. Sign out anything unknown. Also change the password for the email the account uses. Check whether email forwarding has been set up — that can be used to regain access.

  3. 3

    Contact the service

Use official help on Snapchat, Roblox, Discord, Apple or Google. Keep emails and screenshots of what changed. Do not share passwords with anyone who messages offering to “fix it”. If someone used the account to harass, contact SletDet. Digital crime can be reported to the Danish police. Write down dates and times so you have them ready.

You can call 114 or report digital crime on politi.dk. SletDet at Save the Children Denmark advises children, young people and parents. Talk with your child about how the password got out — without scolding if they were tricked.
