Why might this be relevant?

Snapchat and other social media matter early. Parents hear about Snap Map, streaks and group chats — but do not always know what to ask. A shared starting point makes it easier to talk without it feeling like surveillance.

Use this kit when…

  • When Snapchat or TikTok are big topics in class — and parents ask what to watch for
  • After conflicts in group chats — to support parents who want to talk calmly at home
  • When parents ask about location and privacy — e.g. Snap Map and who can message

What parents should know

  • Snap Map can show where your child is — check who can see it. Ghost Mode turns the map off for others.
  • Group chats can grow large and hard to follow. Conflicts often start there — it is normal to talk about it.
  • Quick Add and open settings can mean strangers can message. Check privacy together with your child.
  • Photos and streaks create pressure — it is normal to talk about. Ask how it feels, not only about rules.
  • Online conflicts often belong in a conversation — not public blame. The school can support, but the conversation starts at home.

Talk about it at home

  • “Who can see your location on Snapchat? Do you know how to turn Snap Map off?”
  • “What do you do if someone you do not know messages you? Have you ever blocked anyone?”
  • “Is there anyone in your group chats you do not know? What do you do if someone writes something nasty?”

Do this now

  • How to turn off Snap Map

Step-by-step for parents — Ghost Mode and who can see location.

  • Privacy check

What can others see about your child online? Review profile and settings together.
