Parental controls on Xbox

Xbox uses Microsoft accounts and Family Safety. The same family setup often applies on Windows PC and in the Microsoft Store — not only on the console. One setup can cover several devices if your child uses the same account.

In short

Create a child account at family.microsoft.com, use the Xbox Family Settings app for screen time and content, and set spending and chat in Family Safety. Your child must sign in with their own child account — not your adult one. Check account.xbox.com for privacy beyond the Family Safety app.

  1. 1

    Create family and child account

Go to family.microsoft.com and sign in as family organiser. Add your child as a child — create a new Microsoft account if they do not have one. An adult account does not have the same parental settings. Invite your child to the family via email. Check they accept the invitation.

  2. 2

Get the Xbox Family Settings app

Download Xbox Family Settings to your phone. Sign in as organiser. Here you manage console screen time, age limits for games, and can approve or decline purchase requests. Turn on notifications so you see requests immediately.

  3. 3

    Set spending and approval

In Family Safety (app or family.microsoft.com): select your child → Spending. Add money to their Microsoft account, or require approval for every purchase. Turn on purchase notifications so you see them immediately. Without money on the account they cannot go over the limit. Remove saved cards from the adult account if your child plays on it by mistake.

  4. 4

    Multiplayer and chat

Go to account.xbox.com/settings, select your child, and open Privacy & online safety. Under Communication & multiplayer you can control whether your child can play online, add friends, and who can message them. For younger children: set communication to Friends or Block. Party chat is separate from in-game chat.

  5. 5

    Content and age limits

In the Xbox Family Settings app you can filter games by age and block certain titles. Settings apply to the account your child is signed in with on Xbox — check they are not playing on your adult profile or as a guest. Guest profile has no parental controls.

  6. 6

    PC and Microsoft Store

The same family settings often apply on Windows if your child is signed in with the same Microsoft account. Check Family Safety for app limits and store purchases on PC — especially if your child plays on both Xbox and computer. Minecraft Bedrock and Game Pass follow the same account.

Communication in third-party games (for example Fortnite or Roblox) is also controlled inside the game. Xbox settings do not cover everything. Refunds are handled by Microsoft — not ParentPilot. Check receipts in email and at family.microsoft.com.
