Parental controls on PlayStation
PlayStation has its own family settings — separate from iPhone and Android. Your child needs a child account, not your adult account, or no limits apply. That is a common mistake and easy to fix.
In short
Create a family as family manager, add your child as a child account, and use the PlayStation Family app for spending, playtime, and communication. Also check phone purchases via the App Store or Google Play if games are bought there. V-Bucks and mobile games follow phone rules, not PlayStation’s.
1
Create family and child account
Sign in as family manager at playstation.com/acct/family or on the console: Settings → Family and Parental Controls → Family Management. Add your child as a child — not as an adult. An adult account has no parental controls, and it breaks Sony’s terms if a child uses one. Check your child signs in with their own profile on the console.
2
Get the PlayStation Family app
Download PlayStation Family to your phone (iOS or Android). Sign in as family manager. Here you can see playtime, approve extra time, and change settings without sitting at the console. Notifications about purchases and time can save arguments later.
3
Set a spending limit
In the app: select your child → Settings → Parental Controls → Spending Restrictions. Set a monthly limit for PlayStation Store. To block all purchases, set it to 0. Wallet funds and subscriptions count — also check whether a payment card is saved on the account. Remove the card if you want to be fully safe.
4
Limit games and age ratings
Under Parental Controls → Games and Apps you can set age level and require approval before your child plays new games. You can also see what they have played and for how long — via the app or on the console. PEGI on the box is a starting point — online content is often not rated.
5
Control communication
Under Online Communication you can restrict chat, friend requests, and user-generated content. Communication inside games (for example Roblox) follows the game’s own rules — PlayStation settings do not cover everything inside third-party games. Turn off party chat if your child should not talk to strangers.
6
Check playtime
In the app you can set daily limits and get notified when time is up. Your child can request more time from the console — you approve or decline on your phone. Changes can take a little time to apply on all devices. Agree in advance when extra time is okay.
Refunds for PlayStation purchases are handled by Sony — not ParentPilot. If your child bought via phone, also check the App Store or Google Play. Save receipts if you want to dispute a purchase.
