How to limit chat and spending in Fortnite

Fortnite is many online game modes — Battle Royale is PEGI 12, but content varies. Chat and V-Bucks are what parents most often need to decide on. Creative and user-made maps can look innocent and still contain adult content.

In short

Create or link an Epic account as parent, use a cabined account for younger children, set a PIN on parental controls, turn off voice chat in Fortnite and on the console, and lock V-Bucks purchases in the console store. Also check party chat on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch — it is separate from Fortnite.

  1. 1

    Cabined account and consent

Young children’s Epic accounts start as cabined accounts with limited features until a parent consents via email. Check you approved the right level — not just clicked through. Read the email before you say yes to more permissions.

  2. 2

    Epic parental controls and PIN

Sign in at epicgames.com → Account → Parental controls. Set a PIN. Here you can manage voice chat, text chat, friends list and what can be bought with V-Bucks in the Epic Games Launcher. Store the PIN somewhere your child cannot find it.

  3. 3

Turn chat off — including on the console

Turn voice and text chat off in Fortnite and in Epic settings. Remember PlayStation party, Xbox party and Nintendo Switch Online — they are separate from Fortnite chat. Your child can still talk to strangers there even if Fortnite chat is off.

  4. 4

    V-Bucks and spending

V-Bucks are bought with real money. Epic’s PIN does not always cover purchases in PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or the App Store. Set spending limits on console and phone. V-Bucks are only for cosmetics — not for winning. Ask whether they feel pressure to buy skins.

  5. 5

    Who do they play with?

Ask: solo, with friends or fill/public? Fill can match them with teammates they do not know. Creative and user-made maps vary in content — PEGI warns about this. Agree they leave a lobby if someone is unpleasant.
